Dr. Roy Lee Jr. passed away peacefully at home in Riverside, CT on September 24th, 2016. He was 96 years old.Roy leaves behind his sons, Roy Lee III of Seattle, WA, Michael Lee of Stratford, CT, and Andre Lee of Seattle, WA; daughters Monique Lee Bahadur of London, England and Allyson Lee Blake of Riverside, CT; grandchildren Michael Horvath, Erica Lee, Roy Lee IV, Shawn McGee, Nina Bahadur and Jennifer Bahadur; great-grandchildren King Lee and Alana Horvath; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Phyoncia Henry Lee, who passed away in 2006.Roy was born on June 17, 1920 in Greensboro, NC and raised in Rogersville, TN. He received his A.A. from Swift Memorial Junior College in 1941, a B.A. and M.S. in Chemistry from Kansas State University, and an Ed.D. from Columbia University Teachers College in 1959.A proud WWII veteran, Roy served his country with the United States Army in Europe. A lifelong educator, he taught chemistry and science in a career that spanned over 37 years with positions at Barber-Scotia College in Concord, NC, Bennett College in Greensboro, NC and Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY.Together with his wife Phyoncia, Roy was a leader in the Greensboro, NC civil rights movement and marched with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his contemporaries. He believed that education was the key to self improvement and social responsibility, and was delighted to mentor and guide students from all walks of life.Roy was an engaging and enthusiastic volunteer in the community. He was President of the Greenwich, CT Chapter of the NAACP, and served on the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee, the United Way Executive Board, and the St. Catherine’s of Sienna Church Parish Advisory Council in Riverside, CT. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Greenwich Academy, and in 1988 he spearheaded “Intercept,” a one-on-one mentoring program at Greenwich High School. His many social affiliations include Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternities, and he was a founding member of the Stamford, CT Kappa Alpha Psi Alumni Chapter.Roy will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humour, generosity, and love of learning. He liked to challenge himself with hobbies and projects such as photography, painting, wine making, building a small boat, and restoring both antiques and vintage sports cars. He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford, CT and particularly enjoyed the music and choir performances during Sunday service. Always friendly and affable, he never missed a chance to meet and talk with fellow worshippers during coffee hour.He leaves behind an incredible legacy.
